In the course of a single season, over 40 operas from four centuries are performed along with ballets, concerts and song recitals. This makes the programme of the Bayerische Staatsoper one of the most richly varied performance schedules of all the international opera houses. With 2,101 seats, the Bayerische Staatsoper’s principal performance venue, the National Theatre – built in classicistic style in 1818 – is the largest opera house in Germany and ranks as one of the most handsome theatres in Europe.

Like an outcry the elemental force of the orchestra shatters the silence, the storm on the coast of Cyprus rages incessantly. The wind whips, lightning cuts through the roaring skies. Giuseppe Verdi anticipated the sedition in the hearts of his characters in the revolting nature. His penultimate opera, with which he once again produced musical drama after a long creative break, takes the listener by the throat and holds them so until the inevitable end. As Othello, the great general…

Seeing his love succeed against the will of the parents is pretty difficult in a rural setting. Especially when he is also considered an outsider, things do not look good with the parents-in-law, and there's a lot of money in the mix as well. But what Hans negotiates with Kezal the marriage broker, without discussing it with his beloved Marie, certainly requires a very special kind of chutzpah, and it very nearly goes all wrong – bartering his loved one…

Ernst Krenek's theatrical piece Karl V. consisting completely of twelve-tone series should have premiered at the Vienna State Opera. The political situation in the Vienna of 1933 and the fact that Krenek was despised by the Nazis because of this Jazz opera Jonny spielt auf, prevented the première. It only took place five years later in Prague, however, Krenek had already emigrated to the USA. Karl V was the last emperor to hold to the idea of a Christian empire in which the…

Gold rush, poker and gunfights at the foot of the Sierra Nevada: Puccini's naturalistic opera based on the drama, The Girl of the Golden West by David Belasco, has everything that makes the classic American western so irresistible. It is therefore also a great love story: Minnie, the landlady of the gold digger's saloon, the "Polka", has given her best years to the rough fortune seekers of the Sierra Nevada as a barmaid, teacher, figure of authority and beloved. Now she herself…

The title character in Christoph Willibald Gluck's opera Alceste demonstrates an almost superhuman willpower. To save her husband's life, Alceste sacrifices her own. The compositional reforms in his dramatic works show how much he was ahead of his contemporaries in both the themes he addressed in his operas and in his musical arrangements. The recitatives of the singers are no longer accompanied by the harpsichord alone; strings also come along now. A new connection between music and text has never been created…

"How beautiful Princess Salome is tonight!". Oscar Wilde's French drama, arranged as opera text by the composer himself, was a stroke of genius of the fin de siècle, a scandal on one hand and an absolute hit on the other, both an artistic and a financial success which allowed Richard Strauss to buy his villa in Garmisch. Salome demands the head of the prophet, John the Baptist, who has rejected her, from her lustful stepfather – and bound by an…

In this breathtaking political thriller, Handel's second composition based on a Nero story and only his third opera, everything appears at first to be fine on the stage of power: The Roman Emperor Claudius is said to have drowned while returning from his successful campaign against the Britons. His wife Agrippina, therefore, seizes the moment for Nero, her son from her first marriage, to ascend to the throne. Indeed the librettist Vincenzo Grimani, in ancillary professions also a cardinal and…
